Pivotal Step in Enhancing the Nation's Energy Infrastructure and Security.

On February 10, 2025, a landmark event unfolded at the Port of Richards Bay as Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) formalized Terminal Operator Agreements (TOAs) for South Africa’s inaugural Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) import terminal and a new liquid bulk terminal. This significant occasion marked a pivotal step in enhancing the nation’s energy infrastructure and security.

The ceremony witnessed the signing of two critical agreements:

  • LNG Import Terminal Agreement: TNPA entered into a 25-year partnership with Zululand Energy Terminal—a joint venture between Vopak Terminal Durban and Transnet Pipelines (TPL)—to design, develop, construct, finance, operate, and maintain the LNG terminal at the Port of Richards Bay.
  • Liquid Bulk Terminal Agreement: An agreement was signed with FFS Tank Terminals to build and operate a liquid bulk terminal, enhancing the port’s capacity to handle essential liquid bulk cargo, including bunker fuels.

These agreements are poised to transform South Africa’s energy landscape:

  • Energy Security: The LNG terminal addresses the country’s impending “gas cliff” and supports the transition from coal-fired power stations, bolstering energy security.
  • Economic Growth: Both terminals are expected to stimulate economic activity in the uMhlathuze region, creating jobs during construction and operational phases, and
  • Sustainable Energy Practices: The LNG import terminal aligns with South Africa’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions, facilitating cleaner energy sources for power generation and industrial use.
