In January 2024, LZ Events had the honour of partnering with Transnet SOC Ltd to coordinate the inaugural launch of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in Durban, South Africa. This landmark event, held at the Port of Durban on January 31, 2024, marked the commencement of preferential trade under the AfCFTA, symbolizing a significant milestone in Africa’s economic integration efforts.
Collaborative Planning and Execution
Working in close collaboration with key stakeholders—including the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (DTIC), Transnet Corporate, and The Presidency—LZ Events managed the event from initial concept through to execution and post-event wrap-up. Our responsibilities encompassed:

The event was graced by prominent figures such as President Cyril Ramaphosa, who officiated the launch ceremony. Other notable attendees included Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition Ebrahim Patel; KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube; AfCFTA Secretary-General Wamkele Mene; and trade ministers from various African nations. The assembly of such esteemed guests underscored the event’s significance in advancing intra-African trade.
Event Highlights
A pivotal moment of the launch was the dispatch of South Africa’s first shipment under the AfCFTA, featuring value-added manufactured products destined for Ghana and Kenya. This act symbolized the country’s commitment to enhancing trade relations within the continent and showcased the potential for economic growth through collaborative efforts.
The successful execution of the AfCFTA inaugural launch not only highlighted South Africa’s trade advancements but also reinforced the collective vision of a unified African market.
